@Dip Dibbler yet many countries have found a way to sustainably make democracy work. Here in the US we no longer have a democracy because we let it morph into an oligarchy—just as we did in the late 1800s to early 1930s. I am hopeful the pendulum swings back to a “we the people” democratic republic (meaning ALL the people) before this thing is ruined.

@perlinator Ok to finish up or add a couple of thoughts from here.

First is my disclaimer to being any sort of expert on Greek Philosophy. I am not but neither am I totally ignorant.

Among Plato's idea was to have educated and thereby qualified groups as policy, law makers and judges. That, on it's face makes sense to me. There are modern-day equivalents including the "electoral College" which was in part established because significant numbers of the citizenry were poorly educated, completely illiterate and/or unfamiliar with the platforms of the various candidates.

The Neocons and Q-tards are regressive,anti-education and anti-intellectual as well as not productive and egregiously deficit in many areas of morality, ethics and humanity. Often the repugs are completely unqualified and incompetent in policy making and sadly, even being human. Certainly not fitting any positive definition of leadership as prescribed by Plato. Sophism and Machiavellianism is their stock and trade.

To digress a bit: Slaves entered into the calculations of the electoral college based on votes allocated on headcount.

Natives were not citizens until 1924 and could not participate in the "popular vote" until that time. A lot of places to digress here but trying to focus.

Democracy is not solely a practice of European or American governance.

What I believe personally is from diverse sources. This includes the fact that we are creatures of the earth and belong to the earth. 98.8 % shared genetics with Chimpanzees, some individuals are often warlike and inhuman as apes can be. However, we have the potential to transcend violence and injustice in human society. Perhaps it is even an imperative that we do so before we completely destroy ourselves and much of that which exists on the planet. We are at the point of no-return in some of the aspects of unrecoverable human destruction. It is up to us to co-operate as a species and thereby meet Darwin's premise that cooperation between members of a species determines its success and survival.

That meritocracy and what we used to refer to as institutional memory are what the far right consider the deep state. Anything that stands in their way, requires thought or introspection or demands accountability is the deep state.

@hotrudderedbum : Hey, I'm making no excuses for the despicable establishment Republican party (least of all Paul Ryan), though obviously it's getting worse. People like Moscow Mitch hate the new firebrands but they serve his purpose well. When a guy wants to sabotage government, the crazy entertainment value of the Qs distracts their base quite effectively. They created this monster.
