In Australia, voters are required to cast ballots every time there is an election.
This article, however, argues that if we had mandatory voting (registration with car registration) we'd have less of the Trump variety of politician and more reasonable & intelligent Congress Critters.
What say you? Should the stupids be forced to vote, or just those registered to vote as now?
After 2016, I'm afraid of the 'average voter' because they're so utterly stupid...
Also-ranked choice voting is pretty cool, and Maine was the first state in the nation to implement it for all elections, back in 2016, from a voter initiative:
"Maine Question 5, 2016 asked Maine voters whether to implement RCV for primary and general elections for governor, U.S. Senate, U.S. House and state legislature, starting in 2018. It was approved by 52% to 48%, making Maine the first state to use RCV for all such elections."
We're always ready to do something radical. We like being radical up here. We think everyone should have it!
Up here in WA we had a disaster with RCV in Pierce County and we killed it. I have been nervous about it ever since. Probably worst case scenario but we ended up with a complete fucking loon in the assessor’s office and that then put the focus on the fact he’d only gotten in because of RCV. Meanwhile, in the east side of the state, it’s desperately needed because mighty whities stomp the minority community in the primaries. There’s about zero representation over there for latinos or native Americans. Yet theyre close to 50% of the population. I don’t know the answer outside of someone getting people ot understand that their votes do count and they need to fight for it. We should have mandatory voting for everyone. But not just via motor voter because that doesn’t capture enough people.
